Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion

The exhibition Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and closed last week.  If you missed it, the exhibition catalog is probably worth purchasing.  The showing was fairly large, spanning several specially constructed rooms and about six decades. Included in the show were photographs of top models taken by the top fashion photographers.  Magazine covers from the last half of the 20th century were on view along with the actual clothes that graced the covers.  Dense, small text accompanied most of the magazines under the glass vitrines, extolling profuse information about each model.  Wall text alluded to the theme of the show- the interplay between the photographer or designer and the model, but the highlight of the show for me was the garments.  The four year old to my right succinctly summed up the exhibition when she proclaimed, “look- there are the princess’s dresses.”
